Wilma Joyce (Baker) Arner was born to Jack and Gladys (Beck) Baker, who at the time lived on the Everett Roby places south east of Crawford, on Jan. 1, 1929.
On December 20, 1947, she married Milton Arner in Hot Springs, S.D. For the first few years they made their home on the Lloyd Arner place, where their two daughters, Darlene and Carma were born. From Nov. 1950 to Nov. 1951, they lived on the Health place north of Crawford. They then purchased and moved to their current home east of Whitney. In 1955 a son, Steve was born.
Wilma was one of many who helped start and organize the Whitney School hot lunch program by donating many hours. Through her children's school years, you could find Wilma helping with the holiday parties at the school, driving to field trips and attending activities.
She was a strong supporter of the school PTA, Earth Lodge Extension Club, the Make it With Wool Contest and the Whitney Methodist Church (WSCS). She was a leader in Dawes County 4-H sewing and cooking and was honored many times for her years of dedication, the last honor being a pin for 30 years of continued support to the 4-H program.
In 1984, Wilma started having problems with her health. Rheumatoid arthritis made it hard for her continue the life style she enjoyed. In the fall of 2002, her health started to fail more, and she moved to Crest View Care Center in Chadron. The past few years the crew at Crest View has been a part of her family. She enjoyed and appreciated the care they gave her.
Survivors include: her husband Milton Arner of Whitney; son Steve and wife Diana Arner of Whitney; daughters Darlene and husband Terry Cottier of Sherman Texas., Carma and husband Robert Magenheimer of Castaic, Calif.; brother Bill Baker and wife Ila of Bridgeport; sister Leona Brown and husband Bob of Hot Springs, S.D., and grandchildren Chadd Arner of Chadron, Nikki Arner of Chadron, Heather Cottier of Texas and Scott Cottier of Texas.
