Born 1902 in Mass. to Dr. Jason Ignacio de Freitas and Hilda Svensson. Family removed to California when Edgar was a young boy. Both parents were emigrants: Jason from the Azores and Hilda from Sweden.
In 1922 at the age of 20 Ed signed on to be radio operator on the S.S. Wapama (a two masted Steam Schooner with call sign"WMG") which regularly sailed from Seattle to Long Beach each trip with one million Board feet of lumber. Ed continued this venue until 1923-24 when he changed ships to S.S. WS Porter (oil tanker SF to Australia). Ed then went to Passenger Service with the Los Angeles Steamship Company- San Pedro to Honalulu to Sydney.
Ed sailed as radio operator for the Los Angeles Steamship Company on their Passenger Ships:

When Ed finally came ashore he found a job in LA working in a radio shop repairing and selling radios. He was good at electronics and soon received an offer to go to work for Walt Disney at the Disney Studios. He became a Sound Engineer on Disney`s early films such as Fantasia, Dumbo and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Ed worked on the early development of multi-channel sound tracks for Disney`s epics. The system was called "Fantasound".
After World War 2 began, Ed decided that his talents should be used to support the war effort. Jack Northrop hired Ed to do Electrical Design and flight test work on aircraft that Northrop built. The P-61 Black Widow and the Flying Wing were some of his assignments.
Ed was active in the Masonic Lodge and belonged to Al Malaikah Shrine Temple in Los Angeles.
