Charles Edward Ritchie was born in Tallmadge in 1877. He was elected the first mayor of Tallmadge when the village was incorporated in 1935 and served in this position untill his death in 1941. He spent more than $100,000 of his own money in the restoration of historic buildings on Tallmadge Circle and in other public improvements. His widow, Mabel March Ritchie, left a fortune to Summit County, with Tallmadge to share in benefits from the income.

Charles E. Ritchie
Tallmadge Mayor 1936-1941

Tallmadge was incorporated as a village on January 1, 1936 by a vote of the people, and Charles E. Ritchie was elected as the village's first mayor. He served untill his death in 1941. Mr. Ritchie contributed over $100,000.00 of his personal fortune in the renovation of historic buildings on the Circle along with other public improvements. The people of Tallmadge have continued to benefit from the charitable trust of Charles and Mabel Ritchie. Two examples are the Ritchie Youth Center and Y.M.C.A. and the Ritchie Memorial Scholarship awarded annually to a Tallmadge High School senior.
