He was deputy county clerk of Stephenson County, Illinois, 1859-64; U. S. deputy land surveyor in Colorado, and assistant assayer and chief clerk in U. S. Branch Mint at Denver.

He is credited with laying out the towns of La Veta, Garland, and Alamosa for the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad.

He served in the Civil War as adjutant in 142d Illinois. Vol. Infantry, 1864.
