From his native Reute, a town in Landkreis Biberach, Baden-Württemberg to his final residence at Steilacoom in Pierce County, Washington, he lived in Indiana, Missouri, Montana, and no doubt other locations. He married Maria Lauermann on 24 Apr 1867 in St. Mary's Church, Crown Point, Lake County, Indiana. She is buried beside him. He came from a large family and had at least four children.
