Willis Avery (Full name "Willis" Thomas Avery, was born October 15, 1809, in Perquimans County, North Carolina, son of Vincent Avery and Catherine Cynthia (Overton) Avery. He died July 17, 1889, in Williamson County, Texas, and was buried on his property in Avery Cemetery No. 1. On July 3, 1938,his remains were moved to the Texas State Cemetery in Austin. The remains of his wife were not moved and remain in the Avery Cemetery No. 1.
A Texas State Historical Marker (Marker Number 15306) was erected in 1936 at the burial site of WILLIS AVERY in the Texas State Cemetery in Austin.
Willis married24 Jul 1828 Lincoln Co MO to Elzina Weeks she was born November 10, 1812, in Missouri. She died March 1, 1870, in Williamson County, Texas, and was buried in Avery Cemetery No, 1. Willis and Elzina were the parents nine children, of whom the first 2 were born in Missouri and the remainder in Texas. They were:
1. Nancy AVERY b. 1830. (married William BYRANT)
2. Malinda AVERY b. Birth: Feb. 10, 1831.
3. Vincent R. C. AVERY b:1834.
4. Thomas AVERY b.1836.
5. Lucinda AVERY b.1838/9? (married E.U. KIMBRO)
6. Willis A. AVERY b. 8 Apr 1840, Bastrop Co.
7. Henry AVERY b. 1841
