Major League Baseball Player. Born in Sutherland, Nebraska, he was an outfielder making his debut for the New York Yankees on April 20, 1948. For five seasons, he played with the New York Yankees (1948-50), Detroit Tigers (1951) and the St. Louis Browns (1952). Also of note, he was a member of the Yankees World Series Championships (1949-50) and the last Yankee to wear Babe Ruth's number 3 before it was retired and the last Yankee to wear number 7 before Mickey Mantle took that number in 1951. He finished his career with a record of 199 runs scored, 289 hits, 38 home runs, 172 runs batted in and a .242 batting average. He died at age 74 in Pryor, Oklahoma.
