Aviation Pioneer. Born in the village of Cabangu, Brazil, at the age of 18, he went to Paris to study physics, astronomy, and mechanics. With a keen interest for aeronautics, he built a spherical balloon with wicker basket and made the first ascension in Paris on July 4th, 1898. His second balloon named "America," participated in a competition, reached a greater altitude, and remained in the air for 22 hours. By the early 1900s, he engineered more reliable gas-powered dirigibles, solved the problem of steering the lighter-than-air vehicle and achieved even higher altitudes. Dumont was permanently listed in the Brazilian Air Ministry Almanac with the rank of Lieutenant Brigadier. He occupied the 38th Chair of the Brazilian Academy of Letters from 1931, until his death at age 59 in Guaruja, Brazil. In 1955, he was posthumously promoted to the rank of Air Marshall and is permanently listed in the Brazilian Air Ministry Almanac.
