Samuel P. Rowland was the son of Thomas Rowland of La Puente, and the grandson of John Rowland the California overland pioneer of 1841. Samuel Rowland's mother Zenobia was the daughter of Don Bernardo Yorba, and the granddaughter of Jose Antonio Yorba I a prominent member of Portola and Serra's sacred expedition of 1769.
