Elaine Johnson Carroll died Saturday, June 12, 2010, in Fort Worth. Celebration of life: 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church of Fort Worth. Entombment: Independence Chapel in Greenwood Mausoleum. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Greenwood Funeral Home. Elaine J. Carroll was the daughter of the Rev. Dr. Floyd E. Johnson and Gladys Johnson. With her father being a Methodist itinerant minister, she attended schools in several different towns in central Texas. It was in the high school band in Gatesville, where she met Billy F. Hank Carroll who was to become her lifetime partner. They were married in 1951. For five years she was employed in the geological department of Gulf Oil Corp., then nine years as administrative assistant to the vice president of exploration of Midwest Oil Corp. She then elected to stay at home and raise her family, but organization and administration were so much a part of her routine that she volunteered a large portion of her time throughout the rest of her life. She was organizing secretary for Davis Memorial United Methodist Church in North Richland Hills, organizing secretary for Wedgwood United Methodist Church in Fort Worth, active as Sunday School teacher, United Methodist Women, delegate to the Central Texas Methodist Conference, and in 1991 she was delegate to the World Methodist Conference in Singapore. In more recent years she had been an active member of First United Methodist Church of Fort Worth. At the Woman's Club of Fort Worth, she was president of the Provarsu Study Club from 1973 to 1974, director and an executive officer of the Woman's Club in 1978 to 1981 and again in 1999 to 2002, and president of Woman's Club Scholarship Foundation of Fort Worth, Inc. from 2001 to 2002. She was a member of the board of directors of the Fort Worth Opera from 2000 to 2002. Beginning in 1962 and continuing through 1991, Elaine Carroll was actively involved with the Miss Texas Scholarship Pageant, during which time she served on both the board of trustees and the board of directors. She served on the judges panel for numerous local and state pageants of the Miss America Organizations. Honored jointly, Elaine and Hank Carroll were recipients of the 1982 Graves Award of Outstanding Alumni of Gatesville High School. Together they have travelled extensively in 78 countries over five continents. Elaine was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Dr. J. Bond Johnson. Survivors: Husband of 58 years, B.F. Hank Carroll; son, John; daughter, Karyn Brownlee and husband, Jeff; granddaughters, Michelle and Aimee; one nephew; and two nieces.
