Mary Loving Saunders Thaxton ;(AKA:Mary Loving)


Mrs.Mary Loving Saunders Thaxton, 86, formerly of Roseland,Nelson County, Virginia died Friday, February 21, 2003, at Lynchburg General Hospital.

Born March 30, 1916, in Nelson County, she was a daughter of the late William Richard Saunders and Mrs.Annie Loving Saunders.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Fields Thaxton; a daughter, Mary Frances Thaxton Murphy; and two brothers, William Richard Saunders Junior, and John Shelton Saunders.

Mary Loving was a former United States Postmaster of Roseland, Nelson County, Virginia she served as a past president of the Virginia Chapter of the National League of Postmasters of U.S.
In 1969 the worlds record volume of rain (38 Sq.in 5 hours) , where we lost a lot of friends and kin.. She tried to drive down to the US Postal Office she was the US Postmaster and it had watched away, no phone service etc.. so she borrowed a horse then rode to the nearest location to alert her US Postal Department supervisor..

She was a member and actively involved with Bethlehem United Methodist Church, the Nelson County Garden Club, Nelson County Woman's Club, where she served as president, and a past member of the Winton Country Club.

She is survived by two daughters, Mrs.Virginia Thaxton Harvey and her husband, Thomas Bland Harvey, Junior of Roseland, Nelson County, Virginia and Lelia "Jonni" Thaxton Hatcher of St. Augustine, Florida; one sister, Anne Saunders Clarkson of Arrington, Nelson County, Virginia ; nine grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was conducted Monday, February 24, at Bethlehem United Methodist Church with the Rev. C. Randall Harlow officiating. Interment was private.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Bethlehem United Methodist Church and Roseland Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 39 Roseland, Va. 22967.
