Edwin G. Bennett


Edwin George Bennett, 91, of Bloomington, died Thursday at Bloomington Hospital.

Born Jan. 5, 1902, in Bloomington, he was the son of Jack and Ella (Lanam) Bennett. He was the former owner of Ed Bennett Stone Co. and part owner of the Trade Water Coal Co. in Dawson Springs, KY.

Survivors include one daughter, Catherine Yates of Bloomington; six grand-children, several great-grandchildren and several great-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred (Halstead) Bennett, in 1988; three sons, Wesley Otha Bennett, Leo Bennett and Lester Bennett; four sisters, Ruth Beaman, Mildred Borsenberger, Mary Hanson and Louise Bennett; and one brother, Allen Bennett.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Allen Funeral Home with the Rev. John T. Zanderzee officiating. Burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery.

Friends may call 2-8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

1910 US Federal Census. In 1910, Edwin was eight years old and living with his family on Walker Street in Bloomington, Monroe County, Indiana. His parents are Otha and Ella Bennett. He has two older sisters, Ruth, age 11, and Mildred, age 10, and one younger brother, Allen, age 5.

1920 US Federal Census. Seventeen year old Edwin was living with his family in Bloomington, Monroe County, Indiana. He worked at a Stone Mill. Along with his parents, two other siblings were also living in the house. Allen, age 15, was working a laborer on the family farm, and Sallie, age 9, was attending school.

1930 US Federal Census. On July 9, 1921, Edwin married Mildred Audry Halstead. He was working as a contractor, grading roads, probably working for his father, Otha. Edwin and Mildred were living in Bloomington, Indiana, where they owned their own home. They had three children: Catherine, age 7; Leo, age 5 and Lester, age 2.

1940 US Federal Census. By 1940, Edwin and Mildred were living on North Adams Street in Bloomington, Indiana, a home which they owned. Their children were also living with them.

1950 US Federal Census. Edwin continued advancing his career and owned his own coal mining business, mostly in Kentucky. Now that the children are on their own, Mildred was working as a line operator in a factory. They were living on Crescent Road in Bloomington, Indiana.
