Son of George and Anna (Beisel) Brethour. During childhood the family moved to a farm northwest of Whitney and later to a farm in the Sunflower Community near Mitchell. After his father's retirement, they moved to Scottsbluff. During World War II Roy served in the U.S. Army, 1252nd Ordinance Company in North Africa and Italy. After an honorable discharge in 1945, he returned to Scottsbluff and became owner-operator of Ace Body Shop and Towing. On December 2, 1950 Roy married Dolores Messing at Sidney. They lived and raised their family in Scottsbluff. After retirement, they moved to Northfield Villa in Gering in November of 1999.

Roy was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church, where he served as an usher for many years. He was also a life member of VFW Post 1681, where he served in various offices including two terms as Commander, District Commander and Military Order of Cootie, an Honor Degree of the VFW. Roy was also a member of Independent Garage Owners of American, serving on the Nebraska and national Board of Directors for Nebraska.

He is survived by his wife Dolores of Gering, sons Vernon (Mary) Brethour of Huntsville, Alabama; Father Gary Brethour of McCook and daughter Rita (Roger) Goodfellow of Scranton, North Dakota. Three grandchildren Ryan (Karen) Goodfellow; Rhonda Goodfellow and Annie Brethour. Two great-grandchildren Alison Goodfellow and Damon Brackel; two step-great-grandchildren Mikaela Hultberg and Cody Hultberg. Also a sister Irene Raneri; sister-in-law Selma Brethour; brothers-in-law Ray Swim and Robert Schweitzberger, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Brothers Ted, Al, Ben, Ed and Dick Brethour and a sister Elnora Swim.
