Deceased Name: Hal Leonard Mickelson
OGDEN -- Hal Leonard Mickelson, 84, died Sunday, June 8, 2003. Hal was born September 14, 1918, in Boneta, Utah, the third of four children born to Elmer A Mickelson and Mary Leora Billings Mickelson.
He married Helen Meta Tadje September 21, 1944 in the Salt Lake L.D.S. Temple.
Hal served with pride as an Officer in the U.S. Navy aboard an attack transport, the U.S.S. President Jackson, APA 18, landing troops on a number of Japanese occupied islands during WW II. In the process, he earned four Battle Stars.
Hal graduated from West High School in Salt Lake City and from the University of Utah in 1942 with a B.S. degree.
Following the war he completed various courses at Utah State University qualifying him to take the Civil Service examination in Range and Forest Management. He then went to work for the U.S. Forest Service, serving on various National Forests in Utah, Idaho, and Wyoming. Most of his career, however, was spent in the U.S. Forest Service Regional Office in Ogden, Utah. He retired after 38 years of federal service in 1981.
In retirement he pursued a number of hobbies including home remodeling, gardening and bee-keeping. He loved helping his children and neighbors.
Hal was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held a number of responsible callings.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Helen Meta Tadje Mickelson, Ogden; two sons, Keith H. (Alyce), Truckee, CA., Paul R. (Bonnie), Maple Valley, WA; three daughters, Meta (Stephen) Brown, Ogden; Mary (Daniel) Green, Pocatello, ID; and Ann (J. Patrick) McKenna, Ogden; and one brother, Mont J. Mickelson, Bountiful. He is proud of his 12 grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his parents, a brother Max Mickelson, a sister, Bessie Weaver, and one daughter, Molly Tadje Mickelson.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday, June 14 at 1 p.m. at the Kingston Ward Chapel, 1425 Kingston Drive.
Family and friends may call at the Lindquist's Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd., on Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday at the Ward Chapel from Noon to 12:45 p.m.
Interment will be held at the Salt Lake City Cemetery.
