On January 20, 1835, John was granted a permit in Monmouth to sell retail goods for one year. On March 30, 1835, he purchased 166.80 acres for $1.25 per acre. On March 31, 1838, he sold this land to his brother Seth for $508.50, for a profit of $300 in 3 years.
John married Judith (maiden name unknown) in about 1817 in Athens, VT.

Upon the widower John's death, his two young children were taken in by Abner & Lucy (Oakes) Davis, John's sister & brother-in-law.
