Carl Friedrich Christian Dibbert, the sixth child of Ernst and Minna Dibbert, was called up to active duty to serve his county during the Franco-Prussian War. On December 14, 1870, while operating a canon during a battle in northern France, he received injuries to his left leg. Injuries to the left leg and hand were an unfortunate and frequent injury to soldiers in his position. Carl remained with his troops, continued to man his canon and was later awarded the Franco Prussian Service Medal. Three years after the war ended, he accompanied his parents and younger sister to America to begin a new life.
