Velma Schuman Oglesby went to be with her Lord on April 5, 2006, at 9:58 p.m. from Hawthorne Manor in Danville, Ill.
Her great strength and faith in God have been an inspiration to all who knew her, especially during these last days.
Velma was born on Nov. 26, 1916, to Franklin William and Josephine Stuebe Schuman in Danville, Ill.
She graduated from Trinity Lutheran Grade School and attended Danville High School.
During her lifetime, she worked at F.W. Amend (Chuckles) Candy Factory and the Glove Factory. She was a professional photographer, a florist and a hairdresser. During World War II, she managed a Post Exchange at Kellogg Field in Battle Creek, Mich. During the war, she also did volunteer work at Percy Jones Hospital and at Walter Reed Hospital. She was a talented artist and loved to quilt and crochet. She shared her gifts and talents with many.
Velma was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and enjoyed being a member of the Craft Group. She was also a member of the Eunice Society of Trinity Lutheran Church.
Velma was married to Frederick Marion Oglesby, who preceded her in death on June 22, 2003.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Karen and John Vickers of Danville. The great joy of her life was her grandson, Justin, of New York City. She also leaves behind two stepgrandsons, Shawn (Tina) and their three daughters, Ashley, Brittany and Caitlyn of Bend, Ore., and Eric of Salem, Ore. Also surviving are her sister, Dorothy Sager, brother and sister-in-law, Dick and Barbara Schuman, brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Harold and Frances Berry, several dear cousins, and nieces and nephews that were so very dear to her. She is also survived by a special little friend, Matthew Frerichs.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, brother, Franklin (Bud) Schuman, sister-in-law, Doris Schuman, infant brother, Teddy, brother-in-law, Russ Sager, and stepdaughter, Sheila Roper.
Velma was an amazing mother, sharing her wisdom and strength every day of her life. The role she cherished most was as Non, the most loving and supportive grandmother anyone could have. She was Non to all she met through her beloved grandson, Justin, and to many of her daughter's friends and their children. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
A celebration of her life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 10, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 1930 N. Bowman, Danville, IL 61832 with Pastor Daniel Fienen officiating. A family gathering and visitation will be from 2-5 p.m. Sunday, April 9 at Pape Memorial Home, 10 E. Williams St., Danville. Burial will be in Lutheran Cemetery.
