Rose Violet Zertuche Treviño was born on December, 17 1951 in San Antonio, TX and passed away on April 30, 2010. She was the oldest of five children to Tony and Mary Zertuche. She was the first in her family to graduate from college and to earn a masters degree.
As a librarian she became San Antonio's first Hispanic branch manager at Memorial Library, created the Nation's first bilingual Born to Read program, became a member of the Bluebonnet committee, became first a member and then chair of the Newbery committee. In 1970 she graduated from Providence High School and in 1974 she graduated from Our Lady of the Lake University where she later earned her Master's degree in Library Science.
In 1975 she started her 35 year career as a children's librarian and her marriage to her husband of 35 years Pete Treviño. For 28 years she worked at the San Antonio Public Library and for the last seven years she worked at the Houston Public Library. For her, being a children's librarian was not work, but what she loved to do.
She received numerous awards including the prestigious Siddie Jo Johnson award and just recently a special award for her contributions to the 2X2 committee. She was an active member of the Texas Library Association, American Library Association, Association for Library Service to Children, Public Library Association, and REFORMA the National Association to Promote Library and Information Services for Latinos and the Spanish Speaking.
The highlight of her career was presenting the Newbery Award to Neil Gaiman at the American Library Association's awards banquet in Chicago, IL. Presenting at the banquet was special to her because her family was there to share in her moment. She loved to read and share her passion for reading to children, which is why it is fitting that she passed away on El día de los niños/El día de los Libros, a national day to celebrate children and books in Mexico.
She contributed time reading to children at the Children's Shelter of San Antonio when ever she could. The Treviño family will be making a donation of books in Rose's memory to the Children's Shelter of San Antonio.
She is survived by her husband: Pete Treviño, children: Steven Treviño; Jaclyn Treviño Rendon; and their respective spouses Vicky Valdez Treviño and David Rendon, parents: Tony Zertuche; Mary Zertuche, siblings: Darlene Zertuche Leyton; Yvonne Zertuche; Sonia Zertuche Miller; and John Zertuche; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, and uncles.
