Gustine "Gus" Baxter 1876-1958

Birth year on stone (1873) is incorrect. In June 1880, he was age 4 and in the 1875 Wisconsin state census he was not counted with the family. His year of birth was 1876.

Gus was 10 (almost 11) years old when his mother passed away. There were 10 Baxter siblings in all and after his mother's death some of the siblings were adopted or raised by other families. Gus attended school through the 4th grade. As a teen and young adult, he sailed the Great Lakes. He preferred sailing to steam boating. During the winter months Gus ice fished for herring and trout. His sail sleigh (which he made) was his mode of transportation over the ice. Gus was handy with tools and carpentry; during the winter he filed saws. Gus was an avid hunter. After his sailing years, Gus worked at Peninsula State Park, planting rows of pines. In addition, he was year 'round caretaker for the William Wilms family on Cottage Row beginning in the 1920's to the mid-1940's. Gus married Gertrude Helgason on May 7, 1907 in Fish Creek, Wisconsin and they were the loving parents of Warren.
