Microbiologist. With the US Dept of Agriculture, he developed industrial production methods for penicillin and other microorganisms. His work enabled the production of millions of doses of penicillin before the World War II invasion of Normandy, and is credited with saving thousands of Allied lives. In 1987, he was posthumously named to the National Inventors Hall of Fame, the first government researcher ever to be inducted.
