Master gardener, artist, active in town government

Gordon A. Gaskill, 56, of Provincetown died at his home Monday Jan 7.Gordon was born, raised and educated in Philadelphia. He graduated from Frankfort High School in Philadelphia. In 1971 he moved to Sandwich and then to Provincetown in 1978.He started his own business called Perennial Planters, later called Gordon A. Gaskill Plantsman, and he was a certified master gardener whose touch and inspiration can be seen in many lovely gardens throughout town.He was a long-time member and past chair of the Provincetown Planning Board, serving several terms and then coming back after taking a break to help out again. He also served on the board of directors for the Provincetown Art Association and was a co-founder of the Secret Garden Tour of Provincetown.In addition to his knowledge of plants and gardens, Gordon was interested in painting and studied with Haynes Ownby. He became an accomplished artist in his own right. He was also a significant supporter of the arts in Provincetown.A consummate gentleman with a wry sense of humor, he will be missed by the many people who relied on his companionship and grace.Surviving are his parents, Harold and Margaret Gaskill of Philadelphia.Graveside services were scheduled to be held in the Provincetown Cemetery, Alden Street, on Wednesday Jan. 9 at 11 a.m. A memorial service is planned for the summer when his gardens will be in bloom.Memorial donations may be sent to the Provincetown Art Association, 460 Commercial St., Provincetown MA 02657.
