"William Cavness, Arizona Pioneer, Died in Phoenix
William E. Cavness, 91-year-old pioneer who drove a mule train hauling gold ore from the Vulture Mine to Phoenix near the turn of the century, died in Phoenix Sunday. Funeral services were in that city Wednesday afternoon.
Mr. Cavness came to Arizona from Texas in 1888 with his parents in a covered wagon and homesteaded in Phoenix. He drove a mule which hauled the first streeetcar along the streets of that city. Later he hauled ore for his uncle Matt Cavness [sic, Cavaness] of Wickenburg, the man for whom one of the streets of the Barnette Addition was named. Mr. Cavness also raised cattle in the Bloody Basin and during that time served for 25 years as a member of the Isaac School District and was active in the Boy Scout movement.
He is survived by his wife, Nettie; three daughters, Mrs. James Middleton and Mrs. G. Robert Barfoot, both of Phoenix, and Mrs. W. J. Gardner of Durango, Colo., a sister, Mrs. S. S. Bone, Phoenix; and nine grandchildren."
