Born Aug. 18, 1930, in Rushtown, he was a son of the late Landon and Bessie Lewis Adkins In 1952 he married the love of his life, Joancarol O'Connor, of Elmira, N.Y. Mr. Adkins had a distinguished career with the U.S. Air Force and was a veteran of the Korean War and Vietnam War. He was a member of Moose Lodge No.762, Portsmouth Eagles Aerie No.4285 and the James Dickey Post No.23 of the American Legion.
Surviving are his daughters, Andi Adkins of Yellow Springs, Alissa Elwell of King, N.C., Laurie Miller of Denver, Colo., and Dara Longberry of Columbus; a sister, Phyllis Collett of Westerville; nine grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Also preceding him in death were his wife of 49 years, Joancarol O'Connor Adkins; sisters, Stella Foster, Estolene Phipps and Lavonda Shinkle; brothers, Erna Adkins, Lowell Adkins and Earl Adkins; and nephew and friend, Bill Allen.
Gene was a kind and loving husband, father and friend. After retiring from the Air Force in 1968, he built the family home in McDermott. He taught his children self-reliance, personal integrity and the value of honesty and hard work.
A celebration of life will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday at the Brant Funeral Home in Portsmouth. Interment will be in Scioto Burial Park with military honors by the James Dickey Post of the American Legion. The family will receive friends at Brant's in Portsmouth after 2 p.m. on Saturday.
