When Mary was born, her father was the manager of WWL in New Orleans, Louisiana. For a time, her mother was a radio personality at WWL, where she concentrated on children's programming. Mary's widowed paternal grandmother, Grace S. Foster, lived with the family for many years.
The Fosters moved to University City, St. Louis County, Missouri in the late 1930's. Mary's father worked as the manager of radio station WEW, and her mother worked as a credit manager at Famous-Barr for 25 years.
Mary married William LeGrand Atwood on 06 Nov 1958 in Ferguson, Missouri. They did not have any children.
Mary was a partner in the Atwood-Foster public relations firm in St. Louis. She and her husband, William, established the firm in 1959.
She directed the public relations program for the St. Louis city Youth Opportunity Program in the summer of 1970. She and her husband guided the political campaigns of Mayor Alfonso Juan "A.J." Cervantes.
Mary died of an apparent heart attack at her home in Ferguson 13 days before her 39th birthday. She was pronounced dead on arrival at St. Louis County Hospital.
She was survived by her husband, William; her mother, Lucia Foster; 6 brothers, James R. Foster, Val S. Foster, Albert Steere Foster, Jr., Andrew A. Foster, David N. Foster and Donald G. Foster; and sisters, Lucia Godwin and Joan Dames.
Mary was preceded in death by her father, Albert Foster, Sr.
A memorial service was conducted at 2 p.m. on the afternoon of 01 Jul 1971 at the Ferguson Presbyterian Church in St. Louis County. Ambruster Mortuary Service was in charge of arrangements.
Mary's husband, William, passed away in 1983 and was buried next to her.
