Photographer. A prolific 19th century photographer, he was eighteen years old when he attended the November 19, 1863 dedication of of the National Cemetery at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. There, while working as a photography apprentice, he took the only known picture of President Abraham Lincoln at the dedication, which he snapped just after the President gave his famous "Gettysburg Address." He spent the rest of the war photographing exchanged prisoners, then opened his own studio with his brother in 1868 in Baltimore, Maryland. It eventually grew into Bachrach Inc., and is still in existence today. He became an inventor and a respected writer on photographic art and technology. He and the studio pioneered the concept of the "Official Photo Portrait," hearkening back to when prominent members of society would sit for a official portrait painting.
