When Vara was an early teenager the family lived in Artesia, NM and later is Claude, TX. She helped her father break wild horses which they sold to supplement their farm income. This experience left her with a love of horses that she nurtured late into her life. Her sister Olive Marie Bassett Graffham kept a riding horse on the farm for them to ride until they were "too old to ride anymore".
After a short time in Artesia, NM the family purchased a farm near Claud, TX, outside of Amarillo. After several years at Claud, the family relocated to Franklin Co., KS, near Homewood.
Vara Anna Bassett married Dr. Percy Scollick, a staff doctor at the Osawatomie State hospital. They had two daughters; Georgia Jean and Dorothy Louise. After Dr. Scollick died at the early age of 46, Vara became the secretary to the Superintendent of Franklin Co., KS schools, from which she retired after 31 years service.
Vara loved to walk and it was not unusual for her to walk out to the Smith farm 6-1/2 miles from Ottawa. She lived in Ottawa for most of the rest of her life near Ottawa Jr. and Sr. High School. She lived out the final chapter of her life in Kansas City where she was closer to her daughter Dorothy Louise.
