Betty Werlein Carter was born on Tuesday, July 19, 1910 in New Orleans, Louisiana. She was a well-born New Orleanian, and with her husband Hodding, who she married on October 14, 1931, led a scrappy newspaper in the Mississippi Delta to national prominence in the fight for civil rights. She died Thursday, March 2, 2000 at her home of complications of pulmonary hypertension. She was 89. After her husband died in 1972, she continued as president of the paper until its sale in 1980. She was born into the New Orleans family that founded Werlein's for Music. In addition to her sons: Spokesman and TV personality Hodding Carter III and New Orleans developer Philip Carter, she is survived by a sister; Lorraine Werlein Moore of Kiln, MS; six grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren. A third son, Thomas Carter, died in 1964.

The wedding of Miss Betty Brunhilde Werlein, daughter of Mrs. Philip Werlein, Jr., and Mr. Hodding Carter, son of Mr. & Mrs. William Hodding Carter, of Hammond, will be celebrated on the evening of Wednesdahy, October 14, 1931. Guests will be limited to members of the families and a small number of friends. The ceremony will be performed in the home of Miss Werlein's uncle, Mr. Parham Werlein, at St. Charles and Nashville Avenues, the family home of the Werleins for many years. Miss Lorraine Werlein will be Maid of Honor; the brides-maids, Misses Evelyn Werlein, Betty Felder and Corinne Carter, of Hammond. The Best Man will be Mr. John B. Carter, a brother of the groom, and the Groomsmen, Messrs. Hart Bynam of Baton Rouge, Brandon Wooley, Theodore Bethea and Logan Perkins. The ribbon bearers will be Misses Virginia Smithers, Margaret Henriques, Adele Jahncke and Jane Hayward.
