Lena was the fourth child of Bertha and Romey Houck. Her sisters remember her as being the most congenial of the clan, ever friendly and loving life. Lena went to Morganton High school and worked as a salesclerk. She loved dancing and being with people.

Lena struggled with asthma and heart problems for most of her life, and on Good Friday she came home from work with a cold. The following day she suffered a severe asthma attack and died. Her funeral was held on Easter Monday, after 3 1/2 inches of snow had fallen that Easter Sunday.

Any time that a young person dies, it is heart-wrenching to family and friends. Lena's mother kept her green dancing dress until it fell apart. She had photos copied and kept them in sight all over the house. Lena's ID bracelet and photo album were carefully put away and treasured.

"Lena is still a part of the family; she is just apart from the family."
