Many Mourn Passing of Centerville Lumber Dealer
One of Centerville's well known business men, V. J. (Vest) Craver, 66, passed away at 2:15 p.m. Sunday at the St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. Taken ill during the night Tuesday when seized with a heart attack, he had been making satisfactory progress until Sunday. The end came suddenly, attributable to a coronary thrombosis.
A man with a wide acquaintance, he devoted a considerable portion of his energy and planning to the business he was connected with. Since becoming the manager of the Fisher Lumber Co. in 1920, he remained in that capacity until death. Last September he directed the reorganization of the business, now known as the Craver Lumber Co.
Realised Ambitions
Death came at a time when he had managed to achieve many of his ambitions. His business, firmly established and under the ownership of the Craver's, a new home which he occupied last fall, he was just reaching the time of life when he could visualize an opportunity to relax and enjoy the fruits of his many years of diligent effort. He had recently told members of his family that he hoped to give some of his responsibilities to others and take things a little easier.
His other interests included his community, church, and family. Never one to push himself much, nor to seek the limelight, he was nevertheless a faithful community and church worker. Active In many Association of Commerce projects he realized the need for building a better Centervllle. One of the last civic meetings he attended had to do with some discussion for better community Hospital service.
Church Worker
Whenever his church asked him to perform a task, he responded. A member of the official board at the Methodist Church, he faithfully attended all meetings, and was a regular church attendant. His other church activities included memberships in the Methodist Men and the Friendly Fellows classes.
Another Joy he knew was his family. The father of three sons, he instilled in them the need for assuming life's responsibilities. A quiet, resident personality, he felt a warm affection for his wife, sons, and their families, who were a constant source of pride to him.
Born December 15, 1881, at Kansas City, Kansas, he was the son of Joseph and Mary Craver. At an early age he moved to Taintor, Iowa, with his parents. It was there that he met and later married Miss Blanch Lunt, December 31, 1905. Later the Craver's moved to Humeston where he was employed by John Fisher in the lumber yard there.

He was hired as the manager of the Hawkeye Lumber Co., at Avery, Iowa and remained there until 1918, at which time he moved to Centervllle to rejoin Mr. Fisher in the Fisher Lumber Co. In 1920 he secured an Interest in the lumber yard and became its manager.
Last fall Mr. Craver, along with his sons, acquired all the interests, and the name was changed to the Craver Lumber Co. The way the business had grown through the years was a real satisfaction to him. A hard worker, he reported down town early and stayed late, always striving to improve his business.
In death he leaves his wife, and three sons, Harlan, Ralph, and Leo, all of Centerville. Three grandchildren, Jimmy Stephen, son of Harlan, LeAnn, daughter of Leo, and Dennis Martin, son of Ralph, one sister, Mrs. Flossie Garner of Taintor, Iowa, survive. One brother and sister preceded him, Charles and Mrs. Lora Mitcheltree. His father and mother died a number of years ago.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Miller Funeral Home with Rev. Lester Greenwood, pastor of the Methodist Church officiating, and burial will be in Oakland cemetery.
