Abraham Bowers was born in Oldberry, Worcestershire, Engand and was the son of James Bowers and Maria Lay Bowers. He emigrated to America with his parents and was a member of the first Handcart Company that made its way to Utah.

His father died along the trail and Abraham, who was just 17 at the time, buried him in a wagon box along the trail. To read about the touching story, go to James Bowers' grave here on Findagrave: (Bowers, James b. Jan. 27, 1811 d. Jun. 21, 1856).

After making it to Utah, Abraham settled in Nephi, where he became a farmer and a cabinet maker. He married Johanna Agnetta Jonsson and they were the parents of nine children: Abraham James (1862), Mary Anne (1865), Elsie Nettie (1867), Rose (1869), Julia (1872), Sara Francis (1874), Agnes Jemima (1877), Oscar (1880), and Ethel May (1883).

Both his son and grandson were named Abraham James, but it is believed he had no middle name as no record of such has been found.
