Whitfield was a farrier with the Company A, 7th Kentucky Calvary during the Civil War. He was captured at the Battle of Lafayette, Georgia, June 24, 1864, and was held at Andersonville Prison. He was returning home on the USS Sultana when it was blown up on the Mississippi River, near Memphis, Tennessee, in April, 1865.
