Seventy year old former Newton resident, Mr. Donald Baucum of Jackson, died Tuesday, March 12, 1996, at Methodist Medical Center of heart failure.

Funeral services were held March 14, 1996 at the Baldwin-Lee Chapel with interment in Lakewood Memorial Park.

He had lived in Jackson for 46 years. Mr. Baucum was a Veteran of World War II having served in the U. S. Marines, in the Fifth Division, 28th Regiment, which was responsible for raising the flag at Iwo Jima. He was a retired assistant circulation manager for the Vicksburg Evening Post. Prior to that he had worked for the Clarion-Ledger. He was a member of the Woodville Heights Baptist Church.

Mr. Baucum's survivors include his wife, Tommie Helen Duke Baucum of Jackson; a son, Stephen Donald Baucum of Jackson; a daughter, Cathy B. Lord of Jackson; a brother, Harold Baucum of Grand Bay, Alabama; two sisters, Baby Lee McLelland of Meridian and Ruby Vallas of Decatur; five grandchildren; neices, nephews and cousins.

Donald served in a 60mm mortar section with H Company 3rd Battalion 28th Reiment 5th Marine Division. He along with others witnessed from the base of Mount Suribachi the raising of the flag over Iwo Jima by their fellow 28th Regiment Marines. He had 2 cousins from Newton County who also fought on Iwo Jima, James Williams and George Staton. George was kiled in action.

Great grandchildren: Luke Beckett Baucum, Chloe Helen Mixon and Kayleigh Grace Mixon, Abigail Grace Lord.

Baucum was wounded in action on Iwo Jima on 2 March 1945.
