Ruth Wyllys “Willie” Wannall Barrett was born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1918 and had two siblings. Her family moved to Houston, and her mother Fanita Frow died when she was nine. Her father, William Hudson Wannall (1881–1954), owned a plumbing shop, and they lived on 18th Avenue in Houston. Ruth finished one year of high school and married George J. Barrett in 1939. They lived in El Paso in 1940. Ruth died in 1988 in La Porte.
