Mrs. Lula Guin Abney, 88, formerly of Leita Street, widow of John Ezelle Abney, died Friday, February 1, 2013 at J.F. Hawkins Nursing Home.
Mrs. Abney was born in Newberry, a daughter of the late Lindsay and Mildred Davenport Guin.
Funeral services were conducted at 1:00 PM on Monday, February 4, 2013 at the Whitaker Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. Dr. Tom Malone and the Rev. Jimmy Counts. Interment did follow in Newberry Memorial Gardens. The family did receive friends at the funeral home from 11:30 to 12:30 PM prior to the service.
She was a homemaker, a member of Lewis Memorial United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women, the church choir, church pianist, and Sunday School teacher.
Mrs. Abney is survived by a daughter, June Salters and her husband, Dr. Larry Salters of Irmo; two grandchildren, Kelli S. Kelly (Brian) and Jeffrey Salters (Sarah) all of Lexington; four great-grandchildren, Connor and Sara Kelly, Justin and Collin Salters, and two step-great grandsons: Cain and Robert McKay, all of Lexington; a nephew, The Rev. Dr. Tom Malone of Tryon, NC; a niece, Ginger Sauls (The Rt. Rev. Stacy) of New York City; and two great nephews, Andrew and Matthew Sauls of Lexington, KY. Mrs. Abney was predeceased by her sister, Hethaleen "Het" Guin Malone.
The family suggests that memorials be made to Lewis Memorial United Methodist Church, 1105 First St., Newberry, SC 29018; J.F. Hawkins Nursing Center, 1330 Kinard St., Newberry, SC 29018; or to Hospice Care of Tri-County, 13795 C.R. Koon Highway, Newberry, SC 29108.
The family deeply appreciates the loving care provided Mrs. Abney by the staffs of Springfield Place, Jesse Frank Hawkins Nursing Center, Dr. Michael Bernardo and Tri County Hospice.
The family did serve as active pallbearers.
