Karen Virginia Lee ARMSTRONG

Our wonderful mother passed away on July 5, 2007, in Seattle after a 3½ year battle with cancer. In a cruel twist of fate, this vehement non- smoker died of lung cancer, which metastasized to her brain. She fought the cancer as hard as she could, living 3 years longer than the original prognosis. Karen was born March 21, 1944, at Camp Lee, Virginia, to Dorothy Mae and Wendell C. Fields. With her older sister, Bobbie Lou, and older brother, Harry, the family traveled the world as Army "brats," including living in Germany for several years just after the end of World War II. As a teenager, her family settled in Magnolia, where she attended Queen Anne High School. She married Jerry Armstrong in 1967 and together they raised 3 children: David, Doree and Deanna, in the Renton/Issaquah area. Mom was a devoted mother who was involved in everything her kids did: Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Issaquah Gliders Track Club, PTA, and much more. When her older children were in high school, Mom went back to school, attending Bellevue Community College, where she was the editor of the school paper. She earned her bachelor's degree in communications from the University of Washington in 1996. She became an Internet specialist with Boeing, retiring in 2006. She was heavily involved in the Boeing Macintosh Club and the Boeing Travel Club, was an avid Volksmarcher, and completed two Danskin triathlons, the last just 4 months before being diagnosed with lung cancer. Mom loved to travel. In the last several years she visited Thailand, Costa Rica, Ireland, Mexico, Hawaii, New York, the Grand Canyon, New Orleans, and Washington, D.C./Virginia. Her family held a Life Celebration in her honor in May. More than 130 friends, family, co-workers and neighbors attended the Irish wake with Irish step-dancers, a bagpiper, and a Celtic band. The outpouring of love Mom received that day was overwhelming. No funeral will be held; her family will scatter her ashes over the mountains and water, as she wished. Karen is survived by her children: David Armstrong, Doree Armstrong (husband, Dale Steinke and son, Alex), and Deanna Armstrong (husband, Ted Bishop, son, Benjamin and unborn twins); sister, Bobbie Lou Olszta; brother, Harry Fields; former husband, Jerry Armstrong; and numerous extended family members and friends. Remembrances may be made to the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center or Gilda's Club.
