|Wilbur McCullough in World War I. The words "Carte postale" on the back indicate that the photo was taken in France. Muddy boots and rumpled sleeves show that Wilbur is no longer a new recruit. He wears the Blue Ridge Mountain Division sleeve patch. The uniform was 100% wool, and sleeve patches were silk. Instead of socks, soldiers wore foot cloths: strips of material wound around the feet and up the calves, also called puttees (the term more common in British usage).|
