Edith Janet Bolan, 94, of Rapid City died on Friday, March 12, 2010 at Rapid City Regional Hospital with her family at her side.
She was born to the late Carl and Carrie Carlson, April 17, 1915 in Clarissa, MN. As a young child, Edith moved to Aberdeen, SD where she attended school and later married, Archie J. Bolan in 1946.
After the passing of her husband, she moved to California in 1965 and later returned to South Dakota in 1979 to retire in Rapid City.
During World War II, Edith worked as a welder, crawling into the tight spots in
She also helped support the war efforts by working on the production lines which manufactured bomb castings. After the war, Edith worked within the floral industry.
Edith always maintained a strong belief that people can make a difference in the community by volunteering their time and energy to help others.
Edith was an active member of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) in Rapid City. In 1988, Edith was presented the Governor's Volunteer of the Year Award and in 1989; she received an honorable accommodation from President George Bush as a nominee for the President's Point of Light Award.
Edith was also featured by Newsweek Magazine to represent South Dakota in its special edition entitled "Volunteering in America." In 2004, she received the "Presidents Award" from the SD Community & Family Extension Leaders for her outstanding accomplishments as a senior volunteer.
More recently, the Rapid City Area Chamber of Commerce recognized Edith for 25 years of continuous service.
In her spare time, Edith enjoyed putting puzzles together, playing word puzzles and cards, was a hunting buddy with her son, and was an active member of the Rapid Valley United Methodist Church.
Edith is survived by three children: Georgia Walker and Archie "Mike" (Debbie) Bolan, of Rapid City; and Jackie (Bernie) Hubert, of Aberdeen, and one sister, Dorothy Jelink, OR. She also is survived by ten grandchildren, Jody Clocksin, Allan and Bryan Walker, Melissa Johnson, Marcia Franklin, Steven Bolan, Michelle Campbell, Bernie and Mike Hubert, and LeAnn Diekman; seventeen great grandchildren; and one great great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, 3 brothers, 2 sisters, 1 son, 1 son-in-law, and 1 grandson.
Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Monday, March 15th at Kirk Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church. Funeral services will be held at the Rapid Valley United Methodist Church, 5103 Longview Road, Rapid City at 11:00 am on Tuesday, March 16, 2010 with Pastor Linda Baldock officiating. Graveside services will be held at Riverside Cemetery in Aberdeen, SD on Thursday, March 18th, at 1:00 pm (CDT).
