Civil War Union Army Brigadier General. Commissioned Colonel and commander of the 3rd New Jersey Volunteer Infantry at the outbreak of the War, he took command of the First New Jersey Brigade after Brigadier General Philip Kearny was promoted to divisional command in April 1862. Promoted to Brigadier General, US Volunteers on May 9, 1862, he led his command in the Battle of Williamsburg, the Battle of Glendale during the Seven Days and Second Bull Run Campaign. In an action that was a prelude to the Battle of 2nd Bull Run, his lone brigade encountered Major General Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson's entire Corps near Bull Run Bridge. The vastly superior force routed the First New Jersey Brigade, and General Taylor was mortally wounded (Colonel Alfred T.A. Tobert assumed command after the action). He died a few days after the battle at Alexandria, Virginia.
