Barbara Berkstresser may no longer be with us, but while she was here, she sure knew how to travel well, dress to kill, throw a fabulous party, and love her family.
Born on December 6, 1925, she was raised by her parents, Carlene and Herbert Jones in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, in a house on Farrington Road with a yard full of apple trees and a wraparound porch. But Barbara didn't stay put in the south for long. A handsome young Navy pilot – Officer Charles G. Berkstresser - swept Barbara off her feet in Virginia Beach, VA one summer over sixty years ago, resulting in a marriage that spanned the California coast and the Bermuda shore and eventually, landed the pair back in the city where they first fell in love. As Charles rose to the rank of Captain through many deployments, Barbara was a steadfast support for him and their entire family back on the home front.

Barbara's sister, Faye Dessecker; daughters, Vicki Buchanan and Bobbi Gunn; grandchildren, Robyn Gunn, Brianne Buchanan, and Allen Gunn; two great-grandchildren (and counting); as well as countless close friends who were like family to Barbara, will always remember her as a generous, fiercely devoted and independent spirit whose apple crisp perfecting and card-sharking secrets will forever remain hers alone - not to mention the mystery of exactly what went into those infamous summer party punches.
When Charles passed away forty years ago, Barbara never lost faith that they would one day be reunited. While those of us who knew Barbara are grieving over the personal loss of a strong and caring woman, we take comfort in the belief that she is finally being swept off her feet once again by the man her heart never left.
A memorial service was held Sunday, February 21, 2010. The funeral will be held at Arlington National Cemetery where she will be buried next to Charles on May 5, 2010. Donations can be made to: The Virginia Beach SPCA, 3040 Holland Rd., Virginia Beach, VA 23453 or The Food Bank of Southeastern Virginia, P.O. Box 1940, Norfolk, Virginia 23501.
The family would also like to offer a special appreciation to Dawn Burns for her steadfast love and care for Barbara these last few years.
