WILLIAM D. NORMAN, 65, is dead and Henry Southern is held in the Morgan County jail, the result of Southern having fatally wounded Norman, Saturday night when he is said to have called to Norman to "come out," while the latter was attending a revival meeting at the corner of Grove Street and Wilson Avenue. Southern is understood to have become enraged upon hearing that a grandson of the elder Norman and a Southern boy had been engaged in a quarrel and that the Southern boy had been told to go home. Southern is said to have come to the scene of the revival service armed and to have sought Jim Norman, a son of William Norman. The elder Norman is said to have told Southern that he did not know where Jim Norman was at that time, whereupon Southern is said to have told the elderly man "come on out, you'll do." Southern fired but one shot, the bullet striking Norman on the right side, passing through the stomach and coming out the left side of the body. The wounded man was taken to Benevolent Hospital, but expired about ten o'clock. Southern is understood to have given himself up to officers and was later transferred to the Madison County jail at Huntsville. Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday afternoon at four o'clock at the Norman residence, 301 Grove Street, Rev Berkstresser and Rev Troglen conducting the service. Interment will follow at City Cemetery, Brown directing. The deceased is survived by his wife, four sons, James, B., Marvin and Woodrow; seven daughters, Mrs Mary Haddon, Mrs Kate Smith, Mrs Evie Smith, Mrs. Lula Ellen Hopper, Ruchia Mae Johnson,.....

Suggested edit: The memorial stone pictured was placed by Michael Keith Hudson, great-grandson of William D. Norman and Rosell E. Norman. A photo was taken in 1931 of William D. Norman in his coffin at this cemetery site, along with family members attending the funeral. After locating some of the other tombstones seen in the photo, careful research determined where within the cemetery the tombstones are located and where the photo was taken. This, and some personal communication, revealed that William and Rosie are likely buried underneath, or partially underneath the east-west paved road, in the southwest portion of the cemetery. The memorial was placed as close as could be determined to where they rest. Memorial stone lat/long coordinates are: N 34.6156177, W 087.0010004. Michael Keith Hudson.
