LaRena Murray Abplanalp age 83, died Jan. 18, 2010, at the Uintah Basin Medical Center in Roosevelt, Utah.
She was born March 30, 1926 to William Ashby Murray and Emma Elizabeth Hughes in Vernal, Utah. LaRena was the youngest of William Murray's twelve children. She was preceeded in death by all but one sibling, a brother, William (Bill) Murray, who resides in Mount Pleasant, Utah.
LaRena developed her strong work ethic while being raised on a farm in the Maeser area. She was a lifelong learner and a champion of education. After obtaining her college education as a non-traditional student, she taught school, both elementary and high school in the Montpelier, Idaho area for twelve years.
Following her retirement as a school teacher in Idaho, she moved to Dolan Springs, Ariz. to both "get out of the cold" and to be closer to her sister Letha Mae. While in Arizona she was active with not only her church activities (teaching Sunday school classes and serving a temple mission in the Las Vegas Temple), but she was also active with the local Christian women's group. LaRena assisted in the local elementary school "grandparents program", which included helping children one-on-one with reading and math.
In addition to her church service and volunteer programs, LaRena had an avid passion for current events and national politics. She knew her State Representative's phone numbers and was not afraid to dial them.
LaRena had a zest for life and a love of family. She was preceeded in death by a daughter, Linda Smalley; and her husband Harold Abplanalp. She is survived by two daughters, Julia (Richard) Wolf, Corona, Calif., and Patty (Jay) Hardinger, Vernal, Utah; seven grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.
