S/o of Samuel Pottinger Jr and Lucinda Jameson, He was born in Sam Pottinger's old log house on Lot No.1 in New Haven, KY. He relocated to Missouri in the late 1850's, where he owned land that he farmed with slaves. There is a family tradition that because of being a Confederate sympathizer, Mariman was sent for a while to a Federal prison in 1862. While there, he became very sick, and that his son, Samuel Henry Pottinger, just 10 years old, managed to make his way to the prison with medicine for his father.

Mariman married 1. Elizabeth Lewis (1832-1865) on 25 Sept 1849 in Nelson County KY. She died on Feb.17,1855.

They had three children:

* Emma Linwood Pottinger b 1850
* Samuel Henry Pottinger b 1852
* James Franklin Pottinger 2-24-54 to 8-19-54 prob KY

Secondly, he married Sarah Elizabeth Hayes 17 Aug 1858 in Mississippi County, Missouri.

They had three children:

* Martha Belle Pottinger 1-23-62 to 1883 married W.M. Apperson on Aug 7, 1877
* Stonewall Jackson Pottinger 4-18-64 to 5-23-81 age 17
* Raphael Semmas Pottinger 1-7-67 to 3-26-84 age 17

He died 10 Feb 1871 in Wolf Island, Mississippi County, Missouri.
