Charles Mayer Shriver Jr., 81, of Westminster, died Sunday, Jan. 10, 2010, at Carroll Hospital Center after a brief illness. Born Dec. 14, 1928, in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Charles M. Sr. and Ruth Lee French Shriver. He was the husband of Ruth Dischinger Shriver, his wife of 32 years.

He was a graduate of Gilman School and the University of Maryland School of Agriculture. He was a lifelong dairy farmer and was one of the last Carroll County farmers to actively farm with draft horses. He was a member of Ascension Episcopal Church in Westminster, the Land O' Lakes Cooperative, the Maryland Draft Horse Association and the Alumni Associations of both Gilman School and the University of Maryland. He enjoyed making children happy through circus and clown activities and his portrayal of "Charlie Chuckles the Clown." He had an interest in trains stemming from his family heritage in the B&O Railroad, was an avid agriculturalist and was a supporter of American agriculture in general.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are a sister, French Shriver Foster, of Saranac, N.Y.; three nephews; and numerous cousins, friends and associates.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Hartzler Funeral Home, 310 Church St., New Windsor. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Ascension Episcopal Church, 23 N. Court St., Westminster, with the Rev. Ronald Fisher, church pastor, officiating. Interment will be in Druid Ridge Cemetery in Pikesville.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Union Mills Homestead, 3311 Littlestown Pike, Westminster, MD 21158; or the Maryland School for the Blind, 3501 Taylor Ave., Baltimore, MD 21236.
