U. S. Navy Seabee, Joshua Dae Ho Carrell, age 23, originally of Port Angeles, passed away after a battle with malaria on December 26, 2009, at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany.

Joshua was a 3rd Class Petty Officer with Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 3.

Joshua had contracted Falciparum malaria, the most dangerous form of the mosquito-borne disease, while deployed to Monrovia, Liberia. At the time of his passing, Joshua was helping to build a hospital on a humanitarian project.

He was originally born in Pusan, South Korea, on August 26, 1986, to a college couple who had decided to not get married. Joshua was adopted and brought back to the United States by his late father, Dean Carrell, and beloved mother, Rhonda Carrell.

Joshua graduated from Port Angeles High School in 2005, and in 2006, proudly enlisted in the United States Navy.

After graduating from basic training, he was stationed in the west coast Seabee base at Port Hueneme, California. He served a tour of duty in Iraq during 2008, helping to construct railroad stations and bunkers while deployed.

Joshua was preceded in death by his father, the late Dean Carrell.

He is survived by his mother, Rhonda Carrell, of Port Angeles; sister, Shelley Carrell, of Torrance, Calif. (Jeff, Ryan, Jackie and Justin); brother, Jason, of Puyallup, Washington (Shari, Jake and Drew); grandfather, Hal Landry (Char); grandparents, Bub and Alice Olsen; godparents, Lee and Sandy Sinnes; all of Port Angeles; and an enormous extended family.

Services: A public celebration of life will be at Independent Bible Church, 116 East Ahlvers Road, Port Angeles, Tuesday, January 5, 2010.

Burial will follow at Mount Angeles Memorial Park and will be conducted with full military honors.
