Norma Ruth Alger, 86, of Wabash, died at 8:32 p.m. Friday, May 15, 2009 at Miller's Merry Manor North in Wabash.
She was born July 7, 1922 in Louisville, Ky., to Jesse Franklin and Pauline Estelle Bernard (Wilson) Collins. Norma married J. Kenneth Alger at Fort Collins, Colo., on Feb. 6, 1943; he died April 19, 1985.
She worked many years at Gackenheimer Pharmacy, first as a soda jerk where she met her husband when he came in for ice cream, then as a pharmacy aide. She was a full-time mother and homemaker, which was her prized vocation. She was a Girl Scout leader, Sunday school teacher, avid gardener, and cookie baker. She loved to read and instilled this love in her children, grandchildren, and even great grandchildren. She had a fondness for traveling the beaches of Florida, searching for seashells and watching thunderstorms roll in. She was a master of crossword and jigsaw puzzles.
She is survived by three daughters, Cheryl Koehler of Wabash, Tamara (Bruce) Biehl of Fort Wayne, and Julie Ann (Vic) Lehman of Wabash; two sons, Stanton L.(Nancy) Alger of Lexington, Kentucky, and David Alan Alger of Wabash; sister, Deloris (Earl) Wilcox of Urbana; grandchildren, James Richard (Robin) Koehler of Pine Knoll Shores, N.C., Phillip Kenneth (Tracey) Koehler of Wabash, Bradley Steven (Rianne) Biehl of Fort Wayne, Kristina Kay Biehl of Del Ray Beach, Fla., Marty (Heather) Alger of Williamstown, Ky., Mark (Kim) Alger of Louisa, Ky., G. Russell (Hope) Gaston, Jamie Gaston, Jessica Gaston, Kylee Alger, and Falicia Denton, all of Wabash; great grandchildren, Lauren Koehler and Devin Koehler, both of Pine Knoll Shores, Kristin Koehler, Cutter Koehler, and Kaed Koehler, all of Wabash, Jordan Biehl, Alexander Biehl, Molly Biehl, and Gabrielle Biehl, all of Fort Wayne, Anastasia Gaston, Gwyneth Gaston, Paige Gaston, Benjamin Gaston, Christian Gaston, Aiden Gaston, Katherine Gaston, Jamie Gaston, Jr., Kedron Gaston, and Kloe Gaston, all of Wabash, Samuel Riddle and Shelby Alger, both of Louisa, Isaac Alger, Lucas Alger, and Jonas Alger, all of Williamstown. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Gloria Collins Webb, and her brother, Lemoine Collins.
Private family services and burial will be held at Falls Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Grandstaff-Hentgen Funeral Service of Wabash is in charge of arrangements. The family requests in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Riley Hospital for Children or the Wabash Carnegie Public Library.
