Hattie was the daughter of Joshua Stewart & Laura Ann Jones-Stewart of Arkansas. Hattie's dad was a Civil War soldier and a farmer. Hattie married John S Smith in Dow, Oklahoma and together they raised 2 daughters: Waurika Smith-Crawford and Laure E. Stewart, and one son: Richard S Smith. Hattie's husband John S Smith was a coal miner in Oklahoma.

Hattie first married Walter Scott Mathews on August 24, 1895 in Hartshorne, Indian Territory, now Oklahoma. They had two known children who were enumerated with them on the 1900 census - Gertrude who first married Tobie Davison and later Walter Magdalena, and Rubie who died a couple months shy of her two year old birthday. Hattie next married John Smith on 15 August 1905 in Dow, Indian Territory, now Pittsburg County, Oklahoma where they were still living on 18 April 1910 when Hattie's mother Laura was enumerated with them.
