Photo taken by LIFE Magazine photographer William Clay Shrout Jr for a planned photostory on the Georgia State Guard between April of 1941 and February of 1942. Mark Anthony Cooper III was an officer in the Georgia State Guard of the Georgia State Defense Corps which in modern times is known as the Georgia State Defense Force, an official branch of the Georgia Department of Defense. He was commander of the 27th District of the Georgia State Guard covering Rome and northwestern Georgia, as well as commander of the Air Patrol's Forest Patrol Base at Rome Municipal Airport during WWII.
