PARENTS
Vila Inskeep Richards was the second-born daughter to Wilbur Lambert Long and Leone Heathman on the family farm near Granville MO in Monroe County. Vila had two sisters: Margaret [who married Oliver Bixby]; and Betty [who married Lindale Hershey].
YOUTH
Vila attended the tiny one-room school in Granville that served all ages of the children in that area. She told me she either rode a horse to school, or walked at other times. The distance was a couple of miles. Winter walking was challenging, she told me; as the snow could reach the height of the fence posts!
MARRIAGE
Vila married Lee Rhodes Day [1918-1969] on November 27 1937. Their children were:
1. Melvin Lee Day [1939] +Verna LeBlanc
2. Carolyn Louise Day [1940] +Gary Kasson
2ND MARRIAGE
[Vila's husband Lee was in a car wreck and sustained extensive head injury. He recovered, but had a profoundly changed attitude toward his wife and children. The doctor advised my mother, Vila, to divorce Lee due to his threatening behavior. This she did.]
Vila later married former high-school-years sweet-heart Freddie Lee Richards at the justice of the peace in Troy KS on August 24 1946. They made their first home in Shelbina.
They had a son:
1. Harold Gene Richards [1948] +Terri Lynn Harper
RESIDENCES
Freddie's truck driving career took the family to Pittsfield IL [1949-57, 1959-62], Danville IN [1957-59], and Tuscola IL [1962-1980]. Mom and Dad lived in Tuscola IL for 18 years. After Dad's retirement, she and Freddie moved to Bentonville AR briefly, later to Hannibal MO for two years, and finally, in 1984; back to their roots in Shelbina.
FAITH
Mom believed in the Lord Jesus Christ as her Savior and was baptized, along with my brother Mel and sister Carol, at the Calvary Baptist Church in Pittsfield IL in the summer of 1955. I remember her reading her Bible each evening, it always resting on the table next to her chair. She faithfully prayed at our meals before we ate. My sister Carol remembers her reading Bible stories to she and Mel when they were little tykes.
HOMELIFE
Mom was a life-long homemaker, devoting herself to caring well for her family. She cooked delicious meals, kept our homes immaculately clean, did our laundry and all the tasks women were "expected" to do in the era in which she lived--and she did them well. She loved to sew, making clothing, draperies and other objects on her Singer sewing machine for the family [while I watched in amazement]. She also enjoyed crocheting, and made beautiful doilies and other useful pieces of art. She liked to do the crossword puzzles in the daily paper, and later did word puzzles into her older years.
LATTER YEARS
My sister Carol, husband Gary, and I moved Mom and Dad into Salt River Nursing Home at Shelbina MO in November of 2003 when Dad became so sick he needed professional attention. Mom was beginning to display Alzheimer's symptoms, and he could no longer watch over her. It grieved Pop to know he was going to die and leave Mom behind, and he would choke up when we talked of it. He passed on in April 2004 after 58 years of marriage. Mom remained at the nursing home, being cared for by the excellent staff. We are very thankful for all they did for her!
OUR THOUGHTS
I think I speak for my brother and sister when I say we truly appreciate all she did for our family, and the love she demonstrated to us. She and Freddie were "in love" to the very end of their lives. I greatly miss them both.

Vila'a middle name, Inskeep, [which she did not like!] was the surname of her great grandfather Robert Henning Long's wife Sarah Elizabeth Inskeep. Dad would call her "Skip" as a nickname, which she also was not fond of!
