Marion Russell Cummings was the only son of James Herman Cummings and Cora Dell Van Orman Cummings. Born in Chemung County, NY and raised in Ithaca, by the early 1900's he had relocated to Seattle, Washington, where, at the time of his death, he was district manager of an insurance company.

On 1 March 1909, Marion married Elizabeth Glendenning in Seattle. They later divorced. On 25 January 1921 Marion married Beulah Mitchell Coutts. They had three sons, William M., Robert C. and Marion R., Jr.

On 13 September 1935, Marion Cummings suffered fatal injuries in a fall from a window. His death was ruled accidental by the coroner and was attributed to coronary thrombosis. He was survived by his wife, sons, mother and sister.

Funeral services were held in Seattle and Mr. Cummings was cremated. Three years later, on 31 May 1938, his ashes and his mother's ashes were interred in a common grave in the Ithaca City Cemetery.
