According to family supplied information, birth name was Clarence Franklin. Official enlistment service name is as shown on the headstone, Clarence Fred.

Ensign C. F. Avery, USNR, was designated Naval Aviator #7099 in 1941. Entered active service via the pre-war Aviation Cadet (AVCAD) program. Accepted a regular navy commission in 1944.

LCDR Avery, USN, died in the crash of United Airlines Flight 624 (a DC-6) near Aristes, PA, leaving a widow and one-year-old son. Was the oldest son of Franklin Lane "Frank" and Lucille (Duchaine) Avery.
